I've never owned a turbocharged vehicle before. Today I discovered that if I listen carefully with the windows down, I can hear the wastegates. WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL OF MY LIFE?
Car in question, 2014 BMW 328i, with the N20 2.0L Turbo 4-cyl (240 wheel HP)

Just remember to warm it up pretty good, my turbo makes it sound like a tractor when it's cold.

most of the time in OEM turbos, the wastegate is internal inside the turbo,

Because it's a VW. Our B6 passat 2.0t sounds like a tractor most of the time. But there's nothing wrong with it. Valve lash is good and the turbo is in good shape.

Yeah, it's just the 2.0t engine in general that sounds like a John Deere.

Intoxicating, isn't it? I wrapped up an open-element air filter install a few years ago but didn't really get a chance to test drive it. Car fired up, idled fine, so I called it a day.
Fast forward to the following morning, when I had to commute to work at about 0400 hours. I hopped in, half asleep, and pulled out of the driveway. With the first press of the accelerator through the first gear change, holy crap! The "wooooosh pfffft!" did a good job of waking me up. I was giggling like a little kid, part enamored by the sound and part worrying I'd wake up the neighbors.

A friend lent me his 2014 ford escape with the 2.0 ecoboost.
decent car, nothing too remarkable...
until I discovered that you actually hear the wastegate with the window down.
... fuel economy went down the drain after that.
